Zimbabwe Frontline Series Hits of Zimbabwe Series Soundtracks Others |
Zimbabwe Hits Compilations The Hits of Zimbabwe compilations span three albums and approximately five years. Released on the DiscAfrique label, the set highlights some of Zimbabwe's top traditional and electric pop musicians.
Released:
1985 Take Cover compiles a number of different Zimbabwean artists and styles. From the traditional sounds of mbira legend Ephat Mujuru, to the frantic guitar of The Four Brothers, Take Cover looks to be an excellent introduction to the contemporary music of Zimbabwe. However, it disappoints from my jit and rhumba-loving perspective. While Take Cover does present a variety of Zimbabwean sounds, it isn't up to the level of Viva Zimbabwe or the Frontline compilations. Full review coming soon.
Released:
1987 Zimbabwean guitar-based dance compilation from the mid to late 80s. Heavy on the Marxist Brothers & the Sungura Boys. John Kadzadzi's song is a nice departure from the rootsy vocals of Oliver Mtukudzi, and the breakneck guitar of the Marxist Brothers and Sungura Boys.
Released:
1989 Zimbabwean guitar-based dance compilation from the mid to late 80s. Heavy on Devera Ngwena, & the Jairos Jiri Band. Advance, Kusugar's sound is a bit more varied than it predecessor's - the addition of tracks from the more traditional Master Chivero and musician-comedian Safirio Madzikatire are a nice touch.
