Thomas Makion B: 1968 in Rusape Makion got his start in the 1990's band the Maungwe Brothers. Leading the band alongside his cousin, Leonard Zhakata, the group played classic Zimbabwean rhumba, producing two albums before parting ways. It was in that 1994 Leonard and Thomas struck out on their own. While Leonard achieved fame with Maruva Enyika, Makion enjoyed similar success with Mokorokoto. During the 1990's Makion continued to release consistently, averaging an album every year, including Ushe Madzoro, which produced the hit songs Varmbo Kuvarombo, and 1998's Gungwa Renhamo, which focused on the economic and social problems facing Zimbabwe. His career culminated in 1999 with the release of his Greatest Hits album, a measure of success for any artist. Makion, unfortunately, has faced some professional and personal problems. A rhythm and bass guitarist, Makion has been criticized regarding his musical style. Some fans and critics felt that he emulated the music and lyrics of Zimbabwean superstar Simon Chimbetu. Makion has consistently denied the accusations. Thomas's career was also interrupted by a two-year prison term in 1998. Thomas died in 2002, only months after releasing his latest album, Chisesekedzo. He had planned to tour the UK for a second time.
Released: 2001 Chisesekedzo, Makion's first album since being released from jail and his last before his death, featured a the hit track of the same name. The album focused on the increasingly worsening situation in Zimbabwe, with "chisesekedzo" translating to "tough times" in English.
