The Harare Mambo Band are arguably among the founders of the Zimbabwe's modern music scene. Formed in the 1957 by lead singer and guitarist/keyboardist Green Jangano, the Mambos are Zimbabwe's longest running group. Since then the band has operated as a virtual training ground for Zimbabwean musicians, its revolving door of band members feeding the local music community with competent, creative musicians. Green Jangano's has also relied on his family to supply the band with musicians - as both his wife and son have been members at some point in the band's career.

The band got its start under the Rhodesia regime, where companies such as Lever Soap and British American Tobacco sponsored local groups to promote their products in the black suburbs. They were one of the first bands to sing in multiple languages, including Shona, English, and Malawian. Additionally, the Mambos were the first black band to be featured on white Rhodesian television during the colonial period.

In their modern form the Mambos have relied primarily on playing covers and live shows. However, they have produced their fair share of original music. Some of the Harare Mambo Band's hits include Tamba Suzana, Mbuya Nehanda, and Bohera.

Green Jangano is also known for his work on behalf of musicians as the leader of the musicians union in Zimbabwe.
